O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. She was able to advance to the 100th round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performances. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place again. The judge Werner was confident, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest in show history in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was declared by the President Paul Martin immediately.
